An LAPD spokesperson confirms that Nicolas Cage’s son Weston Cage was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and released on $150,000 bond
Nicolas Cage’s son, Weston Coppola Cage, was arrested on a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon on Wednesday, July 10. He’s since been released on bond.
A Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson confirms to PEOPLE that Weston, 33, was arrested in the city’s 77th division station after turning himself in, on a warrant stemming from an incident that occurred earlier this year.
After his booking at 7:57 a.m. local time, Weston was released on $150,000 bond later that morning at 9:50 a.m., according to police records.
Law enforcement also confirms to PEOPLE that the arrest was directly related to the incident on April 28 in which Weston allegedly got into a verbal scuffle with his mother Christina Fulton at her home in Los Angeles, before the incident became physical.
“During the incident, Cage punched two victims multiple times, causing injury. LAPD responded, and after meeting with all parties, a police report was completed,” they said.
According to police, the case was presented to the district attorney’s office on May 10. The DA filed two counts of assault with a deadly weapon against Weston on June 26, with an arrest warrant issued sometime after.
A rep for Weston did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
Back in May, the LAPD confirmed to PEOPLE that “a battery report was taken” as a result of the incident, while Fulton disputed reports she and her son argued before the alleged scuffle.
“Contrary to their claims, Weston and I had no argument prior to the incident,” her statement to PEOPLE read. “On Sunday, April 28th, I was reached out to by several of Weston’s best friends for assistance because they were experiencing Weston in a mental-health crisis.”
“I acted swiftly to ensure his safety,” the statement continued. “Upon my arrival, I was met by my son who clearly was in a state of a mental-health breakdown, which in turn became a horrific experience. I have always supported helping my son with his mental-health struggles. I am doing all I can to get him the continued support he needs.”
Sources told TMZ that no arrests had been made at the time.
Weston, who has battled substance abuse in the past, was arrested for a DUI and a hit and run in Los Angeles in 2017.
He opened up about his sobriety journey to PEOPLE two years earlier, saying, “It got to the point where people thought I was digging my grave.”
The father of four also shared that the birth of his first child helped him focus on recovery.
“Having the combination of [now-ex] Danielle and Lucian and my father in my life, just that trinity right there, basically is going to keep me here,” Weston said.
