Denzel Washington’s role in Gladiator II is one of the most exciting aspects of the 2024 blockbuster, in part due to its similarities with one of the actor’s most acclaimed recent roles.

Gladiator II’s cast boasts a range of impressive performers, ranging from franchise returners like Connie Nielsen, to newcomers like Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal. However, while there are a number of roles deservedly attracting interest, it is Washington’s that seems the most intriguing.

Set decades on from the original Gladiator’s ending, Gladiator II will tell a similar story of revenge set amidst the backdrop of Rome’s iconic Colosseum. Paul Mescal plays Lucius – previously seen in Gladiator as the nephew of the diabolical Commodus – who has moved on from his troubled past.
