ON THE EDGE Kansas City Chiefs star who won two Super Bowls agrees $24m new contract to stay with Patrick Mahomes’ team
MIKE Danna has penned a multi-year contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs.
The defensive end agreed to a three-year, $24 million deal with the reigning Super Bowl champions.
Danna will pick up a guaranteed $13 million as part of his new contract, per SI.
The 26-year-old enjoyed a career year in 2023 as he put up impressive numbers across the board.
He recorded three tackles as the Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl LVIII to secure his second career ring.
Across the season, he started 16 games and set career highs with 50 tackles and 6.5 sacks.
A flexible option, Danna can line up on the edge or across the defensive line.
Drafted by the Chiefs in the fifth round in 2020, his re-signing at Arrowhead has proved popular with the fanbase.
“You can see how much he means to that defense. I am so glad we brought him back,” wrote one Chiefs fan on X.
“So glad we re-signed Mike Danna. Dude is absolutely underrated and the players love him!!” said another.
“Happy he got his pay day. He is a very solid DE. All he does is go to work,” commented a third.
“One of the most underrated players on defense,” added a fourth.
The Chiefs hope to record a historic threepeat next season as they target a third-straight Super Bowl triumph.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is already back in the gym hard at work ahead of the 2024 campaign.
Kansas City has made moves in free agency to bolster Mahomes’ offensive options.
They have brought in wide receiver Marquise Brown and signed running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire to a one-year extension.
Danna’s signing allows the team to move focus away from the EDGE position in this month’s NFL Draft.
Since arriving in the NFL three years ago, the former Michigan tackle has improved his stats year-on-year.
He was “pursued by other teams” after becoming a first-time free agent, per The Athletic.
But he ultimately chose to follow DT Chris Jones in resigning for the organization as they chase history in 2024.
